My impression was that portal 1 takes place between half life 1 and 2, and portal 2 takes place a very long (undefined) time after half life 2 ep 2. But because of how disconnected from the half life story portal is (and vice versa) you really don’t necessarily need to play all the games in exactly chronological order.
